Which class is for you?

The information below is to assist you in choosing a class that may suit your needs, keeping in mind that many of our members do more than one style of martial art.

5 to 12 year olds. Children in this age bracket look for fun activities that allow them to develop skills and interact socially with other children. They are not focused on winning at this age but enjoy participating. Parents look for value for money. They want to see their children constantly improve. They like clear directions and objectives laid out so they can monitor their child’s development. Kidz Karate was designed to cater for these needs.

13 to 16 year olds (physical but not overly aggressive). These young teenagers are battling with more responsibilities, peer pressure, personal development, body changes, school pressures and an internal struggle to become their own person. We find that children in this age bracket generally don’t like to be associated with primary school aged children. Their ability to learn and question is well developed and they have a desire to achieve. Some teenagers find it very difficult trying new physical tasks as they do not wish to appear foolish in front of their peers. We need to create an environment where they are stretched but do not feel overburdened or put in situations where they feel uncomfortable in front of others. Team sports put a lot of responsibility on all players, martial arts are an individual sport, hence if one person is unable to perform certain techniques it does not impact on the others. The setting is designed to offer support as a community of people working together to help each other grow. Parents of this age group are looking for a way to improve their child’s confidence, to give them a form of protection, a release from the pressure of school or to curb behavioural problems. Zen Do Kai  & Arnis~Kali~Eskrima offer the perfect vehicle for this. With people in the one class from 13 to 60 years of age it offers a great way for teenagers to interact with older people in a very different role to the normal teacher-student, child-parent roles they would be used to. They find a very supportive network and realise that we are all the same – just trying to do the best we can with what we have. It is a great education towards their eventual pathway into the work force and life.

16 to 28 year olds (highly active - like to push boundaries). This age group tends to be very active. They are looking for activities that are fast paced with an element of danger and excitement. They do not tend to stay with one thing for too long but want to experience a bit of everything. Skill development and improvement is important but not as important as just getting involved. They tend to be very socially active and are quick to make friends and mix into a group. Muay Thai is a fast paced class with limited technique; with hard pumping music and intense training, the option to fight in the ring or watch your fellow class participants fight full contact with punches, kicks, elbows and knees. It gives this age group the excitement and danger (generally by association only) that they are after.

14 to 50 year olds (Active – Direct, physically motivated) this group of people tend to be active often playing more than one sport or training in multiple physical activities. They know what they want to do and like to work hard for it. They expect to be pushed and made to work till they have nothing left. They consider themselves strong mentally and physically. Boxing is the class of choice for this group. It focuses on the physical body, is non stop and all about constant improvement through hard work.

28 to 50 year olds (Active / Spiritual). People in this bracket are normally looking for something different. They have played sport or stayed active for most of their lives but are looking for something new to inspire them again. They do not want to be messed around, they know what they are looking for and do not want to be treated as children. Often professionals or the primary bread winner they are conscious of the need for safe participation and do not want to take any unnecessary risk of being injured. They still feel they have something to offer and consider themselves a little different from the average. Zen Do Kai & Arnis~Kali~Eskrimaoffers them the perfect balance of being physically challenging without undue risk, an indoor sport for all year round, physically aggressive but emotionally and spiritually calming and a little off the beaten path.

25 to 50 year olds (Non aggressive / Spiritual/ Traditional). This group likes a balance between the physical work out and the spiritual work out. They are searching for something more to life. They like to be active and don’t mind physical work or physical contact in a controlled environment. They like to discuss what they are experiencing and learn from the experiences of others. Tradition is important to them and they wish to immerse themselves in Asian culture and some Eastern belief systems. Aikido is a traditional Japanese martial art that is designed around the concept of spiritual and self enlightenment through movement. The class is conducted using Japanese terminology and traditional Japanese dress is worn by the participants. Traditional bows and ceremonies are strictly followed and spiritual development is discussed. This is the perfect vehicle for this group.

20 to 70 year olds (light activity / eastern philosophy). This group like the idea of eastern philosophies and wish to stay active and supple but do not feel comfortable lying on the floor, competing with other people or getting overly sweaty and puffed.  Tai Chi would be the recommended activity
